CLF – Wondrous Whale Walk 2023

On Saturday 18th November, over 500 people attended the magical Creative Lights Festival, organised by Film Oxford and Rose Hill Junior Youth club, at Rose Hill Community centre.

Children and young people at JYC spent three weeks making their own ocean inspired lanterns for the festival, and they created some amazing designs!

The festival

On the day, local people enjoyed lots of free creative activities, from music and animation, to headdress making with Oxford City Farm, arts and crafts with RHJYC, lantern making and swimming on a whale thanks to green screen special effects!

Local artist, Mani (thebigorangem), helped children and young people at RHJYC and Chilworth House Upper School create the magnificent whale lanterns from willow, paper and plastic bottles.

Horns of Plenty led over 250 people on the lantern procession around Rose Hill, with local residents joining us on their doorsteps.

This event was supported by Oxford City Council, Oxfordshire County Council, Feltham Construction and Doris Field Charitable Trust.

Poster competition

This year, our festival was ocean themed and plastic bottles were donated by local residents and incorporated into the design of the whale lanterns.

We wanted to raise awareness of the effects of plastic pollution on our oceans through art.

Rose Hill & Iffley Low Carbon, supported by JYC, ran a poster design competition around this theme, and the winner was:

Nikkita Pitson, aged 11

Nikkita won a £10 voucher for her design and her poster will be displayed locally, congratulations!

You can also come and visit our colourful whale and the posters upstairs on the landing in the community centre over winter!
