14 young people took part in our filmmaking project with Film Oxford during the May half-term!

The workshops were led by Film Oxford and the young people spent time learning the skills needed to create a short film about: Activities for young people in Rose Hill.
The aim was to showcase local opportunities for young people, and to let others know how to get involved.
We were really pleased to see new friendships form between the participants and they have since joined our older youth sessions and hang out together, thanks to this filmmaking project.

What we did
The young people learned about sound and lighting, how to set up and deliver an interview, and how to edit their film.
The majority of the young people involved have not had the opportunity to edit video footage before, so it was amazing to see them learn these new skills.
“It made me try what I haven’t tried before, it made me feel part of a group. I enjoyed the part where we got to do the light, film, sound and edit because I haven’t done it before.”

We also went to different locations during the three days, including the local nature reserve, youth allotment space and areas in and around the community centre.
The young people really enjoyed being outdoors and discovering new spaces and activities which they can continue to enjoy in the future.

“Thank you for putting this amazing project together, and to everyone who was involved.”

We really appreciate the support from our funders, without them we would not have been able to offer any activities for young people during the may half-term.
Thank you to the James Cowper Kreston Foundation for supporting our film club. Thank you to our local City and County Councillors, the University of Oxford Community grant and Rose Hill Community centre for supporting our film screening.
And a big thanks to Film Oxford, our brilliant partners, who have developed and delivered these wonderful workshops for our children.
“Thank you for funding this activity, it has been very fun.”

Our film and behind the scenes
Day 1: Learning techniques and filming
Day 2- Filming on location
Day 3 – Interviewing and editing
Workshops at our youth clubs
Film Oxford also ran digital poster making workshops for our children and young people at our youth clubs.
The children had the opportunity to learn how to use Photoshop and how to create a film poster, which would advertise both our short film and a family film at the free outdoor cinema.

It was lovely to see some of the children who created their posters put them up around their community.
They were so proud to see their big posters and were eager to put them around the community centre, local shops and school.
It was a great opportunity to develop self-confidence and new skills, showcasing the talent of our children in the community.
The film screening
Over 100 local people came to watch our youth film and family feature at Rose Hill Community centre on Saturday 20th July.
Due to the weather it was held indoors, but plenty of families still came to enjoy the animated film, ‘Migration (U)’.
It was lovely seeing families sitting together and they really enjoyed watching our short film and the main film!
